waits her turn for the step stool at an equestrian day camp
near Moorpark. Libby's mother says her daughter "loves
animals, especially horses, and benefits from learning to
care for them."
During this winter school break, children have traded in
their books and backpacks for saddles and reins at an equestrian
day camp in the Tierra Rejada Valley near Moorpark.
The Elvenstar riding academy winter camp offers children
from Ventura and Los Angeles counties a daylong program
focused on instruction in horsemanship and riding basics.
The goal of the camp is to introduce children ages 7 to
13 to riding and caring for horses. Students are also taught
the fundamentals of good horsemanship, such as how to handle
and groom a horse and safe practices around horses.
"My first time I was kind of scared and struggling,
but now I just relax and hold on to the reins," said
first-year camper Hannah Banks, 7, of Camarillo, who received
her week at camp as a Christmas present.
Hannah's mother, Amy Banks, said the camp provides her daughter
with a hands-on learning environment where the focus is
on learning, not simply playing.
Officials say the day camp is a sign of continuing local
interest in horses and horsemanship. About 18 children are
taking part in this session while local schools are on winter
vacation.
"Over the last few years, interest has grown in the
program, and we have been close to our maximum for our sessions,"
said Allison Tarry, who manages Elvenstar's riding academy.
Barbara Kloster of Thousand Oaks, president of the local
chapter of a nonprofit riders' group, Equestrian Trails
International Corral 37, described a child's involvement
with horses as a self-esteem builder.
"When shy kids are on a horse, it is like they are
a different person," Kloster said. "In other sports,
you start off slow, whereas in a program like this you learn
so much more in a shorter period of time."
Kloster noted that horses are a part of the history of this
area, though newcomers may view it principally as a suburb
of America's second-largest city.
"I think there is a big interest in horses, but people
moving into this area may not be aware of how many stables
there are or programs
available," Kloster said.
Libby Silverstone, 6, of Temple City has been riding horses
since she was 3. She goes to Elvenstar every few weeks for
lessons, and when she is out of school goes as often as
she can.
Her mom, Annette Silverstone, said the day camp benefits
children because it keeps them focused.
Silverstone said her daughter "loves animals, especially
horses, and benefits from learning to care for them."
Because of the diversity of ability levels of the students
who attend the camp, they are placed in three groups composed
of those at beginning, intermediate and advanced skill levels.
The skills range from the basic — such as getting
familiar with sitting on a horse, holding the reins and
positioning one's body — to practice and instruction
in trotting and jumping.
Sydney Bookey, 9, of Woodland Hills has been riding at Elvenstar
for about a month and is attending camp for the first time.
"The benefits are numerous," said her mother,
Sherry Bookey. "She is learning the responsibility
of taking care of a large animal. The kids learn to put
something before themselves."
In addition to the winter day camp, Elvenstar offers day
camps during spring break and throughout the summer.

A LEG Up to horse sport!FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(818) 563-3250 x6 LEGUpNews@aol.comMarch 20, 2007
ELVENSTAR STARTS 2007 WITH TOP PERFORMANCESBurbank, California.
Jim Hagman built Elvenstar from a small, family venture into
a major hunter/jumper training barn and program in the Los Angeles
area. He takes pride in the fact that many of the champions
riding under his barn’s colors began riding in the Elvenstar
Riding Academy. Samantha Sommers is yet another example of Elvenstar’s
methods. She took her first riding lessons as a six year old
and steadily progressed through the Elvenstar ranks.
Samantha may be one of Elvenstar’s youngest students,
but the ten year old and her six year old large pony, Del Ray,
dominated the pony ring at this year’s HITS Desert Circuit
at Thermal, California. With championships in the Green Pony
Hunters five out of the six weeks, Samantha proudly accepted
the Circuit Championship presented in the Grand Prix ring.
Proving that she is also adept in the equitation ring, Samantha
earned the 11 & Under Equitation Circuit Championship aboard
her Ludovico. With her large pony, Andaba, Samantha was reserve
champion in Week III. Last year she gained valuable experience
attending the fall indoor shows with her veteran pony Wild Blue,
and despite her inexperience Samantha earned prizes in the Medium
Pony Hunters among the country’s best. Now, her younger
sister, Ashley, will start riding and Wild Blue will also show
her the way. “Samantha is a teacher’s dream,”
said Jim Hagman. “She loves horses and everything about
them. She is the best sport you can have, and she is a delight
as are her parents.” Jim spotted Del Ray on a trip to
Wellington (FL) earlier this year. Although he didn’t
really want to pair a young rider up with a young pony, Jim
knew a winner when he saw one. “We happened on him as
the sun was setting. He trotted in the ring and jumped the first
jump in the Green Pony class and he took my breath away.”
Samantha’s performances during the HITS Desert Circuit
only confirmed what Jim already knew.
Another Elvenstar student, Demi Steigler, is emerging as one
of the top fourteen and under riders, and her pairing with the
veteran equitation horse, Amadeus, poises her to be a serious
contender. At the 5th week of the HITS Desert Circuit, Demi
outrode 59 other riders to win the Marshall & Sterling Children’s
Equitation. She also finished third in a very large CPHA Foundation
Equitation Class. Demi rides at Elvenstar’s satellite
location at the Orange County Fairgrounds and meets up with
Jim at the shows.
The mother and daughter team of Gail Horrigan and Elsa Horrigan
earned their share of awards in the amateur equitation and hunter
sections during the HITS Desert Circuit. New horses are the
theme for Elsa, who rides in the 18-35 amateur age group. Elsa
showed primarily in the 3'3" hunter sections to get used
to her new mounts, but her strong performances meant that she
will quickly be jumping in the 3'6" Amateur Owner classes.
Salvador is a 17.0 hand six year old, and Crimson Z is a stallion
the Horrigan’s imported from Argentina. “He is so
quiet,” said Elsa’s mother, Gail, “that you
would not know he is a stallion.” Jim and his partner,
Dan Silverstone, travel to Argentina several times a year where
they have established valuable contacts and continue to find
quality horses.
Jim develops junior and amateur riders at all levels. They gain
valuable show ring experience at small, one day, non-USEF shows,
and then transition to a highly competitive “B”
circuit. By the time Elvenstar riders hit the “A”
circuit, they are well prepared for the challenges of horse
shows and they know what to expect. The ribbons on the tack
room are the proof. |

5, 2007 ~ Sydney Hutchins mentioned in
press release! |
| The jumper division has grown significantly
in the last seven years, and the Gold Coast shows offer jumper
classes for beginning horses and riders up to 1.40 meters. Low
Child/Adult Jumpers is a new year end award category for the
Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association. This 3'3" level
is very popular, and Kymber Mallory piloted Edelweis to the
championship. Adrienne Rockwell rode her Alize to a first and
two seconds in the Children’s Jumpers where the pair earned
the show championship. Andrew Casey trains the young rider,
who also rides in various medal classes.Gold Coast shows are
also very popular with beginning level riders because of the
variety of classes. “I really like
being able to take our newer riders to such nice shows,”
said Jim Hagman of Elvenstar. Sydney Hutchins had a great show
after winning both the Short Stirrup and the Green Rider show
championships aboard Fox in Sox. The young rider trains at Elvenstar. |
